In only two seasons did the versatile utility infielder play 100 games at any one position. Hatfield was twice involved in trades involving future Hall of Famers, first George Kell and later Early Wynn. He was a direct descendant of the Hatfields who feuded with the McCoys. (GEB)

» June 3, 1952: In a blockbuster trade between Detroit and Boston, the Red Sox send Walt Dropo, Don Lenhardt, Johnny Pesky, Fred Hatfield, and Bill Wight to the Tigers for 3B George Kell, Hoot Evers, Dizzy Trout, and Johnny Lipon.

» May 15, 1956: The White Sox send infielder Jim Brideweser and 3B Bob Kennedy to Detroit for infielder Fred Hatfield and outfielder Jim Delsing.

» December 4, 1957: The White Sox send fan-favorite Minnie Minoso and infielder Fred Hatfield to the Indians for P Early Wynn and OF Al Smith. Wynn coming off his 1st losing season, will rebound with the White Sox, topping the American League in wins and innings in 1959. The trade was the first for the new Indians' GM Frank Lane.
