The steady-hitting first baseman was stuck in the Yankee farm system while Lou Gehrig was in his prime. Sold to Brooklyn, Hassett hit .310 his rookie year. Gehrig retired, and the Yankees traded top prospect Tommy Holmes to the Braves in 1942 to retrieve Hassett. His appearance with the Yankees in the 1942 WS, before entering the military, marked the end of his career. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» April 15, 1936: The Giants Harry Gumbert defeats the Dodgers Van Lingle Mungo, 5–3, in a game the features a fine brawl between Mungo and Dick Bartell. On an unassisted ground out to 1B Buddy Hassett, Mungo comes over to cover the bag and gives a hard block to the batter Bartell, Rowdy Richard goes flying and comes up swinging. Umpire Beans Reardon races over and pries the two combatants apart, then tosses them. Tomorrow they get a fine from Frick.

» December 13, 1938: Fred Frankhouse returns to the Boston Bees, and Joe Stripp goes to Brooklyn in a player swap. In a separate transaction, the Dodgers send Buddy Hassett and Jimmy Outlaw to the Bees for Gene Moore and Ira Hutchinson.

» June 14, 1940: In the Bees 4–2 win over the Cubs, Boston 1B Buddy Hassett fouls out in the 8th inning after hitting safely in 10 straight at bats over three games. He walked once in the streak. Before the game, Boston sends C Al Lopez to Pittsburgh for C Paul Burris and cash.

» February 5, 1942: In one of their best trades ever, the Braves get minor-leaguer Tommy Holmes from the Yankees for Buddy Hassett and Gene Moore. Hassett will hit .284, then join the Navy and will not make it back to the ML. The much-traveled Moore will be traded by the Yanks in less than three weeks. Holmes, with three .300+ seasons in the IL, could not break into New York's all star outfield. In 10 seasons with the Braves he will hit over .300 and win the MVP in 1948.

» May 29, 1942: New York's Lefty Gomez, self-described as the worst-hitting pitcher in baseball, bangs out four hits in pitching a 4-hit, 16–1 victory over Washington. They are his last ML hits. Buddy Hassett adds four hits as well.
