Hale was called up after his three hits led the Orioles' Piedmont League team to an upset of the parent club in an exhibition game. His 19 pinch hits (an Indian record) and 63 pinch at-bats in 1960 led the AL. 40% of his ML at-bats came as a pinch hitter. (RTM)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 28, 1961: The Yanks buy 1B Bob Hale from Cleveland. This will make vet Earl Torgeson, signed on June 17, expendable. They'll release Torgy as a player in early September and sign him as a coach.

» September 6, 1961: Roger Maris connects for #54, off Tom Cheney of the Senators, as the Yankees win, 8–0, behind Whitey Ford's 5-hitter. Ford is now 23–3. John Blanchard hits a pair of homers, each time following a walk to Mickey Mantle, and Moose Skowron and Bob Hale also homer.
