Gutierrez hit a career-high .263 as the Red Sox' rookie shortstop in 1984, but set ML records for the fewest assists and total chances by a shortstop in a full season. He hit only .218 the following year, lost his job back to Glenn Hoffman, and was traded to Baltimore. His father and brother competed in track and field in, respectively, the 1936 and 1964 Olympics.
