The quintessential "good field, no hit" shortstop, Gutierrez nevertheless made baseball
history with his bat. In the second game of a June 21, 1970 doubleheader, he had
six singles and a double in seven at-bats in a 12-inning game to set the AL record
(and tie the ML mark) for hits in a game without making an out. But 1970 was the
Venezuelan's only season as a regular; he hit a career-high .243 and led AL shortstops
in errors.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
»June 21, 1970: Cleveland wins the first game against Detroit, 2–1, but Detroit's Cesar Gutierrez then goes 7-for-7 with six singles and a triple to tie a record set in 1892, in a 12-inning 9–8 nitecap win. Mickey Stanley's home run wins it for the Tigers. Gutierrez, wearing #7, started the game hitting .218, and was 0-for-18 before today. Gutierrez will collect just seven hits in all of 1971, and 128 hits for his career.
