A Michigan native who grew up idolizing Detroit's Al Kaline, Gumpert was signed by the Tigers in 1980. At his peak, he recorded a 2.64 ERA relieving in 26 games in 1983 and was voted the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association's Rookie of the Year. (JCA)
