The 6'2" 185-lb Gumbert began his fifteen-year career as a starter. He reached double
figures in wins from 1936 to 1941 and again in 1943-1944, including an 11-3 mark
in 1936 and an 18-11 record in 1939. He spent 1945 in the military and by 1947 was
strictly a reliever, totaling 48 saves over his career.
Gumbert appeared in WS
for the Giants in 1936 and 1937 and the Cardinals in 1942. He pitched in a total
of six games, allowing 12 hits and five walks with a 27.00 ERA.
Gumbert led the
NL in games pitched in 1948 (61), relief wins in 1947 (10) and 1948 (10), relief
loses in '47 (10) and '48 (8), and saves in '48 (17).

»April 15, 1936: The Giants Harry Gumbert defeats the Dodgers Van Lingle Mungo, 5–3, in a game the features a fine brawl between Mungo and Dick Bartell. On an unassisted ground out to 1B Buddy Hassett, Mungo comes over to cover the bag and gives a hard block to the batter Bartell, Rowdy Richard goes flying and comes up swinging. Umpire Beans Reardon races over and pries the two combatants apart, then tosses them. Tomorrow they get a fine from Frick.
»May 19, 1938: Cubs pitcher Bill Lee shuts out the Giants on five hits to win, 1–0, in 10 innings. Lee scores the winning run to beat starter Harry Gumbert.
»June 8, 1938: New York regains the lead with a double win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, winning 4–2 in 10 innings, then taking the nightcap, 4–1. Harry Gumbert beats Larry French in the first game while Carl Hubbell is the victor in game 2, beating Bryant. French will lose 19 games for the Cubs, one shy of the league leader in the category.
»June 23, 1938: The Cubs sweep two at home against the Giants, winning 7–4 and 3–1. Bill Lee is the victor in the opener, topping Harry Gumbert, while Dizzy Dean bests Hal Schumacher in game 2.

The Giants sell Ernie Koy to the Reds and send P Harry Gumbert to the Cardinals for P "Fiddler Bill" Bill McGee. Gumbert will go 11–5 for the Cards in 1941 and pitch another 10 years.
