The 6'3" 190-lb Grissom was 12-10 in 1952, his first full season in the majors. He starred as a reliever for the Giants from mid-1953 to 1958, winning 10 games and saving 19 in 1954, and also winning the first game of the WS that year. He registered his career-low ERA of 1.56 in 1956. He served as the A's pitching coach after his retirement as an active player. His brother Lee pitched in the majors from 1934 to 1941. (CTA)
    FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» February 10, 1953: The White Sox send pitchers Marv Grissom, Bill Kennedy and Hal Brown to the Red Sox for 33-year-old infielder Vern Stephens. A perennial All-Star in the 1940s, Stephens' best years are behind him.

» April 24, 1954: Marv Grissom and the Giants shut out the Phils, 1-0, at the Polo Grounds. Whitey Lockman's 300-foot home run off Robin Roberts is the only score.

» May 28, 1954: At the Polo Grounds, the Giants whip the Dodgers 17–6 with a 6-HR barrage. Four of the home runs come in the 8th as Davey Williams, Alvin Dark, Monte Irvin, and Billy Gardner connect off Ben Wade. Whitey Lockman, in the 1st, and Willie Mays, in the 2nd account for the other two. Brooklyn scores a run in the 6th when Giants P Marv Grissom balks home Rube Walker from 3B. Catcher Ray Katt is at fault, having called a time out when Grissom is in his windup.
