Griner never had a winning major league season; with the 1913 Cardinals, he topped
the NL with 22 losses. Back with St. Paul (American Association) in 1919, relying
on his "mudball," he did not allow an earned run in winning three complete games
in the playoffs against Vernon (Pacific Coast League).
