» Some Expos Nostalgia by Maxwell Kates

Although his pitching speeds ranged from slow to slower, Grimsley was effective for the powerful Reds of 1971-75. He was named lefthander on the Baseball Digest 1971 All-Star Rookie team, pitched a two-hitter in Game Four of the 1972 NLCS, and won a pair in the WS. Handsome, with wild, curly hair and piercing green eyes, he was also a free spirit. His refusal to conform to the Reds ' short-hair policy helped hasten a trade to Baltimore. The son of Ross Sr., who pitched briefly in the ML, Grimsley signed with Montreal as a free agent in 1978. That year he became the Expos' first 20-game winner and was named Montreal Player of the Year and Tennessee's top pro athlete. (ME)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 4, 1971: At Riverfront Stadium, the Reds recover from being no hit to roll over the Cards, 12–0. Ross Grimsley pitches his first ML shutout and is backed by a 17 hit attack. George Foster and Tony Perez each have four hits.

» June 23, 1971: In a singular performance, Phillie pitcher Rick Wise no-hits the Reds 4–0 and bangs two home runs in the game, a dinger each off Ross Grimsley and Clay Carroll. Wise gets Pete Rose for the last out. It is the 2nd no-hitter against the Reds this month.

» September 1, 1972: The Reds edge the Expos, 1–0, in 12 innings on Johnny Bench's single. Ross Grimsley and Clay Carroll combine on the shut out.

» October 10, 1972: Ross Grimsley of the Reds allows but two hits—a single and a home run by Roberto Clemente—to even the series with a 7–1 victory.

» December 4, 1973: The Reds trade P Ross Grimsley to the Orioles for OF Merv Rettenmund and INF Junior Kennedy. Grimsley will win 18 in 1974 for the Orioles.

» June 18, 1974: Orioles 2B Bobby Grich makes Ross Grimsley's home win over the Twins a little easier by belting three consecutive homers. The O's win 10–1.

» September 2, 1974: Boston pitchers Luis Tiant and Bill Lee each allow just one run in a Labor Day doubleheader, yet both lose games to Baltimore. Ross Grimsley and Mike Cuellar toss twin 1–0 shutouts.

» September 15, 1974: Cleveland's Gaylord Perry works hard for his 20th win, beating Baltimore's Ross Grimsley, 1–0. Perry will go 21–13 and is the last Indian pitcher this century to win 20.

» December 21, 1977: Free Agent Orioles pitcher Ross Grimsley signs with the Expos. Grimsley will reward Montreal with a 20-game winning season in 1978.
