Griggs was a football star at Kansas University and the University of Pittsburgh.
In his baseball career, he was a steady hitter who played on 15 clubs in ten leagues
throughout a 27-year pro career. In his best ML performance, he hit .364 in 28 games
with Detroit in 1918. He was also a respected minor league manager.

»June 16, 1914: With the score knotted at 5–5, the Brooklyn Tiptops (FL) unload for seven runs in the 12th off St. Louis Terrier player-manager Three Finger Brown. Art Griggs ends the scoring by purposely missing three pitches from the 37-year-old reliever. Little Johnny Tobin then leads off with a Terrier home run and St. Louis scores eight times to win, 13–12. The 15 runs is an extra-inning record.

The Cards announce the first trade of the meetings. They acquire 1B Jack Fournier from the Los Angeles Angels for four players, all acquired earlier. LA gets 1B Art Griggs, C Grover Hartley, P Claud Thomas, and INF Jim McAuley.
