Griffith was a swift right fielder with one of the best arms in the NL. He was consistently
in double figures in assists and topped 20 three times. A favorite with Dodger fans
from 1919 to 1924, he was an occasional .300 hitter. His best all-around year was
1921, when he hit .312 with a dozen homers and drove in 71 runs for Brooklyn.

In the 1st inning of Game One against the Robins, Phillies pitcher Bill Hubbell is hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Tommy Griffith and fractures his skull. Hubbell will return to pitch in 35 games this year. Brooklyn sweeps a pair, winning 75 and 7–0. Vance throws the shutout.
