Green was a superb-fielding, light-hitting second baseman, whose glove work was a key to Oakland's three straight World Championships (1972-74) and a highlight of the 1974 WS. In the clincher, he was the pivot man in an exciting eighth-inning double play that preserved the A's 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. The Iowan led AL second basemen in fielding in 1969 (.986). Usually a second baseman during his 12 years in Kansas City and Oakland, Green played every infield position and even caught two games. He had some power, reaching double figures in homers four times. His best year offensively was 1969, when he hit .275, with career highs of 64 RBI and 43 extra-base hits. (TJ)
