Signed off the Detroit sandlots, Gray was a hard-throwing star in WWII service ball. In the majors, the forkballer was hindered by chronic blisters and he held his ERA below 4.00 only once in nine seasons. After eight seasons with the Tigers, he appeared with four different teams in 1955. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 9, 1949: At Detroit, the Tigers set back the first-place Yankees, 4–1, behind the five-hit pitching of Ted Gray. Vic Raschi also allows just five hits, including a homer by Dick Wakefield, in taking the loss.

» June 2, 1950: The Tiger's George Kell hits for the cycle in the 16–5 second-game sweep of a Detroit doubleheader with the A's. The Tigers cop the opener, 8–2, behind the pitching of Ted Gray and the home runs of Vic Wertz and Hoot Evers. Wertz has five RBI in the opener, and two more in game 2.

» December 6, 1954: The Tigers trade 1B Walt Dropo with P Ted Gray and OF Bob Nieman to the White Sox for 1B Ferris Fain and Jack Phillips.

» June 15, 1955: The Indians pick up Ted Gray who had just been released by the White Sox.

» August 4, 2000: The Blue Jays obtain OF Dave Martinez from the Rangers for a player to be named later. Martinez becomes the 9th major leaguer to play for four teams in a season. He began the year with Tampa Bay and also played with the Cubs, in addition to Texas and Toronto. The last to do so was Dave Kingman, in 1977: before him, according to historian Scott Flatow, the four-in-one players were Frank Huelsman, 1904; Willis Hudlin, 1940; Paul Lehner, 1951; Ted Gray, 1955; Wes Covington, 1961; and Mike Kilkenny, 1972.
