In a swap of the infirmed, the Indians send pitchers Scott Winchester, Danny Graves, Jim Crowell and INF Damien Jackson to the Reds for veteran P John Smiley (9–10 in 1997) and infielder Jeff Branson. The three new Reds pitchers all have had rotator cuff surgery; Smiley is out the year with a broken arm; and Jackson has had knee surgery.

The Reds defeat the Astros, 3-0, as Ron Villone and Danny Graves combine to toss a 1-hitter. A single by C Tony Eusebio is Houston's only safety.
» April 14, 2001: A major league record is set as 11 one-run games are played, breaking the mark of 10 set in 1967. With a 1–0 win over the Mets, the Reds set the modern day NL record with their 175th consecutive game without being shut out, breaking the mark of 174, set by the 1992-93 Phillies. Chris Reitsma and Danny Graves combine to beat Al Leiter.
» May 8, 2001: Diamondbacks flamethrower Randy Johnson strikes out 20 Reds in Arizona's 4-3 win over Cincinnati in 11 innings. Johnson gets all 20 in his nine innings of work, but does not tie Roger Clemens and Kerry Wood's record since the contest goes into extra frames. The Reds score two in the top of the 11th, but the D'Backs come back with 3, scoring the winning run on a bases loaded walk by reliever Danny Graves.
