Gonzales coined a standard phrase with his pithy assessment of the abilities of a player he scouted: "Good field, no hit." That could also describe the playing career of the Cuban-born catcher. Although he played for five NL teams, he is most often associated with the Cardinals, for whom he served as regular catcher (1916-18 and 1924), longtime coach, and twice as interim manager. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» April 15, 1911: The Reds and Cards swap catchers, with Mike Gonzales going to Cincy and Ivy Wingo to St. Louis.

» December 6, 1921: John McGraw finally gets Heinie Groh from the Reds; it costs him C Mike Gonzalez, OF George Burns, and a reported $250,000. Other figures range as low as $100,000.

» May 23, 1925: The Cards trade C Mike Gonzalez and infielder Howard Freigau to the Cubs for catcher Bob O'Farrell. O'Farrell, who suffered a fractured skull from a foul tip, played just 71 games in 1924 and lost his job to Gabby Hartnett. But O'Farrell will have a banner year for the Cards, hitting .293 and catching 146 games, and then take over as manager in 1927. Freigau will hit .307 for the year.

» June 7, 1940: With the Cardinals starting badly (14-24), owner Sam Breadon fires Ray Blades as manager. Bill Southworth is brought back from Rochester to replace him. Mike Gonzales is the interim manager until Southworth arrives.
