Puerto Rican-born Ruben Gomez was an erratic starter, given to wildness, who went 17-9 for the 1954 World Champion Giants despite a league-leading 109 walks. Late in his rookie 1953 season, Gomez hit Carl Furillo with a pitch, and the Dodger outfielder went at Giant manager Leo Durocher, who the Dodgers accused of ordering beanballs. Furillo broke his hand in the ensuing melee, ending his season, while his .344 batting average stood to cop the NL crown.

The Braves' Joe Adcock had hit seven HR in nine games coming into a night game at Milwaukee on July 18, 1956. Gomez hit him on the wrist in his first at-bat and they exchanged remarks as Adcock went to first base. Adcock charged the mound; Gomez threw the ball, hitting him in the thigh, and then ran for the safety of the Giants' dugout. Gomez was fined $250. He also had a beanball war with Cardinals pitcher Sam Jones in 1957, and that July 16, Gomez put Frank Robinson in the hospital, hitting him in the head with a pitch. (JK)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 6, 1953: The feuding continues, as the Dodgers beat the Giants 6-3 but lose Carl Furillo, the NL's leading hitter at .344, for the rest of the regular season. Furillo is hit on the wrist by a Ruben Gomez pitch in the 2nd. With a 3-2 count on the next batter, Furillo races from 1B into the dugout to swing at Leo Durocher. In the melee, a Giants player steps on Furillo's left hand, breaking a finger.

» October 1, 1954: Dusty Rhodes gets his 3rd pinch hit of the WS, driving in 2 runs in the 3rd. He is hitting for OF Monte Irvin, who ironically had 11 hits in the 1951 Series. The Giants' Ruben Gomez easily bests Indians P Mike Garcia 6-2.

» January 11, 1955: Before an exhibition game in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Willie Mays and teammate Ruben Gomez get into a brawl. It starts when Gomez slips into the batting catch ahead of Mays, and batting practice pitcher Milt Ralat then refuses to throw. The sulking Gomez sits down on the plate, and Mays then steps to the side and directs the pitcher to throw to him there. Ralat then throws an insulting slow pitch which Willie barehands and fires back. He and Ralat exchange words and when Mays walks towards the mound, Gomez, brandishing a bat, attempts to interfere. Mays drops him with a right. The two later apologize to each other.

» September 21, 1957: Gail Harris is the last player to hit a HR as a New York Giant, as they beat the Pirates 9-5 in the 2nd game of a doubleheader. Ruben Gomez gains the last New York Giants' victory.

» April 15, 1958: The San Francisco Giants defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first ML game played at Seals Stadium, with Ruben Gomez pitching an 8-0 shutout. Giants SS Daryl Spencer hits the first HR. The Giants set an attendance record for Seals Stadium by drawing 23,192 fans.

» September 1, 1958: In San Francisco, the Giants sweep a doubleheader from the Dodgers (and five of six in the Labor Day series) by taking the 1st in an A.M.-P.M. doubleheader, 3–2. Mays is 5-for-5 with two doubles and a home run. The nitecap is a memorable four hour: 35 minute marathon. The Giants tie it in the 9th on Schmidt's homer, and the Dodgers go ahead, 5–4, in the 16th on Carl Furillo's RBI. Whitey Lockman's home run in to bottom of the 16th ties it, then a bunt single by Ray Jablonski is followed by another bunt by P Ruben Gomez. Errors by John Roseboro and Furillo follow allowing Jabo to score the winning run. Mays is 11-for-20 for the series, with four homers.

» September 20, 1958: The Giants Ruben Gomez gives up three hits, all to Bobby Gene Smith, as the Giants beat St. Louis 5–1. Willie Mays's three hits raises his average to .340, and he steals his 30th base, the first to steal 30 three times since Kiki Cuyler in 1930.

» December 3, 1958: The Giants trade P Ruben Gomez and C Valmy Thomas to the Phils for P Jack Sanford. Sanford, who slipped in his sophomore year will win 24 games in 1962, including 16 in a row, while leading the Giants to a pennant. The Phils Carpenter will later rue, "it was the worst trade I ever made."

» July 6, 1962: The Indians regain first place from the Angels, as Ruben Gomez beats Early Wynn and the White Sox 5–3.
