Books and articles about Dan Gladden

Gladden was hitting .397 at Triple-A Phoenix in 1984 when he was promoted to the Giants, and the speedy outfielder maintained his torrid pace in San Francisco, batting .351 with 31 stolen bases in 86 games as the Giants centerfielder. He earned spots on both the Topps and Baseball Digest all-rookie teams that year.

Traded to Minnesota before the 1987 season, Gladden was switched from centerfield to left, where he started regularly for the World Champion Twins. In the '87 World Series, his grand slam off Bob Forsch broke open Game One. Gladden was a Twins regular through their second World Championship in 1991, and scored the winning run in Game Seven of the World Series when Gene Larkin singled in the tenth.

Despite the thrilling victory, Gladden felt the front office was less than enthusiastic when it came to offering him a new contract. In December, at the age of 35, he signed a free-agent deal with the Tigers. A slow start was followed by a month-long stint on the DL, and he slumped badly in the second half. Gladden rebounded with a career-high 13 homers in 1993, but spent the 1994 season with fellow expatriate Henry Cotto on Japan's Yomiuri Giants. (SCL)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 5, 1985: Expos Mickey Mahler (1–0), making his first start in six years, yields one hit in whitewashing the Giants, 6–0. The only hit is a 3rd inning single by Dan Gladden.

» October 17, 1987: In the first indoor World Series game ever (at Minnesota's Metrodome), Dan Gladden's grand slam caps a 7-run 4th inning and leads the Twins to a 10–1 win over St. Louis in game one. It is the first World Series grand slam since 1970.

» July 27, 1991: Dan Gladden's 3-run homer in the 9th enables the host Twins to beat Milwaukee, 7–4. Gladden's hit follows a bunt single by Shane Mack and a dribbler by Randy Bush. He has now driven in the winner in three straight games.

» October 12, 1991: The Twins take a three games to one lead in the ALCS with a 9-3 win behind Jack Morris. OF Dan Gladden drives in three runs for the victors, and Kirby Puckett homers.

» October 27, 1991: The Twins become World Champions with a 1-0 victory in 10 innings behind Jack Morris's masterful pitching. Gene Larkin's single off Alejandro Pena scores Dan Gladden with the game's only run. The game is the first Game seven to go into extra innings since the Senators-Giants Series in 1924. Morris is named the Series MVP for the Twins, who win all four games in the Metrodome while losing all three in Atlanta. Four of the seven games are decided on the final pitch, while five are decided by a single run, and three in extra innings. All are Series records.

» June 17, 1993: Cleveland 2B Carlos Baerga hits three home runs in the Indians' 9-5 loss to Detroit. The Tigers hit five 4-baggers of their own, including a pair each by Travis Fryman and Dan Gladden. Three players with two or more homers in a game ties an American League mark.

» August 11, 1993: Tigers OF Dan Gladden hits a grand slam in Detroit's 15-5 win over the Orioles. Gladden also hit a grand slam in yesterday's game against Baltimore, making him the 14th player in history to do so in consecutive games. Earlier this year, Mike Blowers became the 13th player to match the mark.
