FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» November 18, 1998: In a good swap for Pittsburgh, the Indians trade OF Brian Giles to the Pirates for P Ricardo Rincon.

» August 20, 1999: Diamondback's P Todd Stottlemyre makes his first start since tearing the rotary cuff in his right arm on May 17. Stottlemyre, who eschewed surgery in favor of a strengthening program, gives up seven hits to the Pirates in four 2/3 innings, including a pair of homers by Brian Giles. He will go 2–1 the rest of the year.

» April 6, 2000: The Pirates defeat the Astros, 10-1, as OF Brian Giles goes 5-5, including two homers and a triple. Pittsburgh P Francisco Cordova does not give up a hit to Houston until one man out in the 8th inning.

» July 29, 2000: The Pirates defeat the Padres, 10-2, as OF Brian Giles goes 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles.

» July 28, 2001: In a day-night DH, Vinny Castilla of the Houston Astros became the 13th player this season to hit three home runs in a game when he does it against the Pittsburgh, but the Pirates still edge the Astros, 9–8, with an amazing comeback. Pittsburgh becomes only the 2nd team in NL history to win a game by scoring seven runs with two outs and nobody on base in the 9th inning. Brian Giles caps the scoring with a walk-off grand slam off Astros ace Billy Wagner to win it. The Cubs did it, against the Reds, in the first game of a doubleheader on June 29, 1952.

» September 27, 2002: The Pirates beat the Cubs, 13–3. Brian Giles scores five runs for Pittsburgh and drives home six with a double and a pair of home runs. Giles will hit a pinch 2-run home run tomorrow to finish the year with 103 RBIs.
