Gilbert, a scrappy John McGraw-type player, was the keystone star of the Giants infield when they won pennants in 1904 and 1905. McGraw, managing Baltimore, had purchased Gilbert in 1902 to play shortstop. When McGraw took over the Giants in 1903, Gilbert came along and took charge of second base. Gilbert later managed in the minors and coached for the Boston Braves. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 1, 1902: Rube Waddell wins his first game for the Athletics, blanking Baltimore on two hits 2–0. He fans the side three times, once on nine pitches in the 3rd, and faces only 27 batters, as C Ossee Schreckengost throws out the two base runners. In fanning the side in the 3rd, 6th, and 9th, Waddell strikes out the same three men each time: Billy Gilbert, Harry Howell, and John Cronin.

» May 28, 1904: The Superbas score a run in the 10th against the Giants to take a 3-2 lead at the Polo Grounds, but the Giants answer with a pair for a 4-3 win. After a walk by Billy Gilbert, Jack Warner lines a pitch down the RF line into the stands, 258 feet away for the dramatic win, Joe McGinnity's 12th straight.
