Both a starter and reliever, Gibson pitched well in his rookie season, going 4-2
with a 2.93 ERA, but experienced control problems in 1989. Nevertheless, he teamed with Mike Henneman as Sparky Anderson's main lefty-righty tandem in 1990 and '91 before moving to the Mets in January 1992 in a deal for outfielder Mark Carreon.
