Gibson was a wild power pitcher with no effective breaking pitches. He was a middle reliever and sometimes starter except for the second half of 1985, when he bolstered a failing Rollie Fingers in Milwaukee's bullpen and finished 6-7 with 11 saves. (JCA)

» June 8, 1962: The Cardinals Bob Gibson tops the Giants 8–4, dropping San Francisco to 2nd place in the National League.

» July 7, 1963: 3B Jim Ray Hart debuts with the Giants singling and doubling during a 15-inning, 4–3 squeaker over the Cards at Candlestick. In the 2nd game, Hart suffers a broken collarbone when hit by a Bob Gibson pitch.

» August 12, 1963: Back in action for the first time since being beaned by Bob Gibson, the Giants' Jim Ray Hart returns to the hospital after Curt Simmons plunks him in the head. Simmons had an 0–2 count in the 9th on Hart during an easy 13–0 Cardinal win at San Francisco.

» September 10, 1963: Stan Musial hits a home run in his first at bat as a grandfather, and Bob Gibson (17-8) blanks the Cubs 8–0.
