A 6'4" University of Mississippi basketball All-American, Gibbon looked like the emerging star of Pittsburgh's staff in 1961 (13-10, 3.32). After an injury-plagued 1962, he bounced back in 1964 to go 10-7. He went to the Giants in a 1965 trade for Matty Alou, who then won the 1966 batting title. By 1968 Gibbon was solely a reliever. (ME)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» April 17, 1960: Pittsburgh's Joe Gibbon makes his ML debut in the 2nd game of a twinbill with the Reds. With the Pirates down 5–0 in the 8th, the rookie comes in to mop up. Gibbon throws two scoreless innings and the Bucs score six in the 9th for a 6–5 win. Hal Smith's 3-run pinch homer and Bob Skinner's 2-out, two-run homer off reliever Ted Wieand makes Gibbon the winner. The Bucs win the opener, 5–0, behind Bob Friend's 4-hitter.

» December 1, 1965: The Giants send Matty Alou, coming off a .231 season, to the Pirates for P Joe Gibbon and infielder Ossie Virgil. Alou will rebound to lead the National League in hitting and have four straight seasons over .331.
