Giambi impressed with a league-leading .372 batting average for the Royals' Triple-A affiliate in 1998. But although the retirement of first baseman Jeff King opened up a spot with the major-league club, Giambi was hindered by inconsistency and hamstring problems, and shuttled between the minors and Kansas City until a February 2000 deal sent him to Oakland for pitcher Brett Laxton.

The trade reunited Giambi with his older brother, Jason, one of Oakland's most valuable sluggers. (As Giambi the Elder turned in an MVP season, GM Billy Beane dubbed his younger sibling "Mini-G.") The pair became only the second set of brothers to play for the club after Jose and Ozzie Canseco both donned A's uniforms in 1990. (ArB/JGR)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» February 15, 2000: 18th The Athletics obtain OF Jeremy Giambi from the Royals for P Brett Laxton. Giambi joins his brother, Jason Giambi, in Oakland, becoming the 6th brother combo to play for the team.

» May 8, 2000: The Angels defeat the A's, 9-8, despite home runs by brothers Jason and Jeremy Giambi for Oakland. Vladimir and Wilton Guerrero of the Expos were the last brothers to homer in the same game.

» July 18, 2001: Jeremy Giambi is 4-for-4 with six RBIs to lead the A's to a 7–2 won over the Twins. It is their 15th win in 19 games.

» August 3, 2001: Oakland edges the Detroit Tigers, 2-1, on Jason Giambi's 9th inning solo homer. The win goes to Tim Hudson who outduels Tiger ace Jeff Weaver. The A's collect only four hits, with Giambi's blast completing a team cycle— Terrence Long has a triple, Johnny Damon a double, Jeremy Giambi has a single, and Jason Giambi the home run.

» August 11, 2001: Led by the two Giambi brothers, Oakland beats the visiting New York Yankees, 8–6, for their 10th straight win. Jason Giambi and Jeremy Giambi each club 2-run homers, the 2nd time they've both gone deep in the same game. They did it twice last year as well.

» September 25, 2001: The hot Oakland A's slug the Angels, 9–3, using an 8-run 7th inning. It's the A's 13th home win in a row. Jeremy Giambi has a 3-run pinch double in the big frame. Angels SS David Eckstein ties the major league rookie record with his 20th HBP, tying the mark set by Frank Robinson, in 1956.

» May 22, 2002: The Athletics send OF Jeremy Giambi to the Phillies in exchange for IF/OF John Mabry. The trade, viewed as one–sided for the Phils, will be a good one for Oakland. Giambi will homer in his first two Philley at bats on the 25th, and be the first player in major–league history to hit eight homers in each league before the All–Star break. He'll finish the year with 20. That, plus Jason Giambi's 41, will give the Giambi boys the record for homers by brothers in the same season, topping the 59 hit in 1937 by Joe DiMaggio (46) and Vince DiMaggio (13).

» December 15, 2002: The Red Sox acquire Jeremy Giambi from the Phillies for P Josh Hancock, 24, For Giambi, it is his 3rd uniform this year.
