Gernert was a power hitter out of Temple University. He hit 19 HR as a Boston rookie and 21 as a sophomore in the only years he was a regular. The off-season schoolteacher pinch hit four times for the Reds in the 1961 World Series. (EW)
    FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 8, 1953: After 13 straight losses to New York, the Red Sox win a dramatic 11-inning 2–1 thriller at Fenway. Billy Goodman's homer off starter Johnny Sain gives starter Hal Brown the win. Dick Gernert's 2nd inning home run is the other Boston score. In Boston's last win over New York, August 9, 1952, all the scores came on solo homers.

» May 22, 1957: The Red Sox set an American League record by smashing four home runs in the 6th inning in an 11–0 win over Cleveland. Gene Mauch, Ted Williams, Dick Gernert, and Frank Malzone do the honors. All of these come on the first 16 pitches from Cal McLish. Williams had set the record with Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin, and Jim Tabor in 1940.

» November 21, 1959: In the first inter-league trade, the Cubs send 1B Jim Marshall and P Dave Hillman to the Red Sox for 1B Dick Gernert.

» May 10, 1961: The Reds trade 2B Jim Baumer to the Tigers for 1B Dick Gernert.
