FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» November 1, 1918: Outfielder Alex Burr is killed in France on his 25th birthday, the 3rd major leaguer to die of WWI. MLB players killed in WWI include Alex Burr, Larry Chappell (in eight days), Eddie Grant, Ralph Sharman, and Bun Troy. World War two ML casualties will be Elmer Gedeon, James Trimble and Harry O'Neill. Bob Neighbors will be listed as Missing in Action in Korea to complete the casualty list. There will be no ML players killed in Korea.

» March 8, 1941: Phillies P Hugh Mulcahy becomes the first big leaguer drafted into the Armed Forces for W.W.II. Mulcahy, an All Star in 1940 while leading the NL in losses for the 2nd time, will pitch less than 100 innings when he returns after the war. More than 100 major leaguers will be drafted within the next two years, and two—Elmer Gedeon and Harry O'Neill—will be killed in action.

» April 30, 1944: Elmer Gedeon, who played briefly for the Senators in the outfield in 1939, is killed in air action over France.
