» September 12, 1905: Cards pitcher Jack Taylor allows just three Pirate hits-all by Honus Wagner-and teammate Harry Arndt swipes home in the bottom of the 9th to give St. Louis a 2-1 victory. Wagner will spoil two more no hitters by collecting the only hits: against Art Fromme on May 27, 1911 and facing Phil Douglas on October 2, 1914.
» June 6, 1908:
At the Polo Grounds, Christy Mathewson beats the Cardinals, 3-2, for his 20th straight win over St. Louis stretching back to June 16, 1904. Art Fromme takes the loss. Matty allows four hits and strikes out 8, including Joe Delahanty three times. He also walks two in a row, an unusual occurrence.
» December 12, 1908: The Cardinals are busy. First they get C Admiral Schlei from the Reds for pitchers Ed Karger and Art Fromme. Then they pack off Schlei, along with P Bugs Raymond and OF Red Murray, to the Giants for veteran catcher Roger Bresnahan. Bresnahan, a future Hall of Famer, will be the player/manager of the Cardinals for the next four years. Raymond lost 25 games in 1908, but a record 11 of them were by shutouts.
» April 12, 1911:
The Reds suffer their worst Opening Day ever, losing to the Pirates, 140. Babe Adams tops Art Fromme. The Bucs 17-hit attack is led by Wagner, with three hits, Dot Miller with four hits and Bobby Byrne with five hits and five RBIs. Reds reliever Jesse Tannehill, pitching his first NL game since jumping the Pirates ship in 1902, gives up six hits and walks three in 4+ IP. The shock is so great that Tannehill retires after this game.
» May 27, 1911:
Art Fromme allows just one hita double by Wagner in the 2ndin pitching the Reds to a 10 win over Pittsburgh.
» June 13, 1911: Christy Mathewson (112) gives up 11 hits but still beats the Reds, 52. Art Fromme loses as Matty wins for the 19th straight time against Cincy.
» August 3, 1912: At the Polo Grounds, the Giants score runs on two solo homers by Fred Merkle and one by Beals Becker, off Art Fromme, to beat the Reds, 32. In a typical game, Christy Mathewson scatters 10 hits and walks none for the win. Armando Marsans is 4-for-4 for the Reds.
» August 27, 1912: It takes a one-hitter by Art Fromme, but the Reds finally beat New York, and Christy Mathewson 20. Art Fletcher's single is the only safety. The Giants' lead shrinks to three 1/2 games over the Cubs.
» September 16, 1912:
The Reds shut out the Phillies in a twinbill, winning 60 and 10. Art Fromme allows four hits in the lid lifter, while Rube Benton outduels Grover Cleveland Alexander, 10, in the nitecap. Benton allows five hits.
» May 22, 1913:
The Giants send Red Ames, Heinie Groh, and outfielder Josh Devore to Cincinnati for P Art Fromme and infielder Eddie Grant. The little-used Groh will star in Cincinnati, and eventually manage the team. Devore will be sold to the Phillies in August. Grant, a starter until today, will not play until June 4th, so there is some confusion (as noted by Cliff Blau) about whether he was sold on that date or part of today's trade.
» July 22, 1913: New York sweeps two from Pittsburgh, winning 83 and 21 in 11 innings. Al Demaree wins the rout in the opener, and former Pirate Art Fromme, in relief of Christy Mathewson, picks up the victory in the 2nd game. Fred Merkle drives home George Burns to win for New York. The Giants now lead the NL by eight games.
» August 12, 1913: Art Fromme, with relief help from Christy Mathewson, beats Brooklyn, 65. Matty comes on in the 11th and gives up a lead off triple to Zack Wheat, but the Giants pitcher cuts down the chaff that follows, and New York wins, 65.
» May 7, 1914: The Giants come from behind to beat the last-place Braves, 76, scoring four runs in the 8th inning. Art Fromme is the winner.
» June 26, 1914: In Boston, the Giants hammer the Braves for 27 hits, winning 84 and 104, and put Boston back in the cellar. Boston had moved into 7th with yesterday's win over New York. Christy Mathewson wins the opener over Lefty Tyler, and Art Fromme wraps up the nitecap.
