Frey played
in three All-Star Games and three World Series, and in 1939 batted .291
and scored 95 runs to help Cincinnati into the WS. Pitcher Bucky Walters remembered
teammates Frey, Myers, and third baseman Bill Werber as "good, fast, smart ballplayers."
Indeed, Frey was fast enough to lead the NL with 22 stolen bases for the Reds in
1940. Although he twice topped NL shortstops in errors, Frey led the league's second
basemen twice each in fielding percentage and double plays.

»June 16, 1940: The Reds manage just two hits off Wyatt but beat the Dodgers, 1–0, at Ebbets Field. Lonny Frey's unusual home run in the 9th settles the game: Frey's hit strikes the top of the RF wall, bounces straight up, and settles on a ledge on top of the wall next to the scoreboard.
»May 22, 1941: A smart play by the Reds Lonny Frey helps Cincy to a 6–4 win over the Giants. With one out and the sacks full in the 1st, Chuck Aleno hits a DP grounder to short. Frey, running from 2B, allows the ball to hit him for an out, stopping play and putting Aleno on 1B. Ernie Lombardi then hits a grand slam. Frank McCormick adds a 2-run home run in the 3rd.
