Ford broke in with the Braves in 1919 while still attending Tufts University, foregoing his final year of college eligibility. A smooth fielder and timely hitter, he set the record (since broken) for double plays by a shortstop (128) with the Reds in 1928, as the team set a record for double plays (194) that lasted for 30 years.
