In high school, the ambidextrous Foley played shortstop righthanded and quarterback lefthanded. Unable to win an everyday job in the majors, his ability to play second, third, and short (though unspectacularly), and his value as a lefthanded pinch hitter got him into at least 100 games in five of his first seven seasons. In spring training with the 1986 Phillies, he was knocked out cold sliding into a base on March 16 and had his wrist broken by a Roger McDowell pitch the next day, disabling him for more than a month.
