FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 18, 1996: The Padres and Tigers swap shortstops and catchers, the Tigers getting Andujar Cedeno and Brad Ausmus for John Flaherty and Chris Gomez.

» July 27, 1996: The Padres pound the Marlins, 20-12, scoring six runs in the 6th inning, and nine in the 8th. Wally Joyner leads the way with five ribbies, while John Flaherty hits a grand slam. The Padres are the 6th club to score 20 runs in a game; the last time that happened was 1929.

» July 28, 1996: Padres' C John Flaherty has his 27-game hitting streak stopped by the Marlins in the Padres' 8-2 win. The streak is the 2nd-longest ever by a catcher behind Benito Santiago's Padres' record.

» November 18, 1997: The expansion draft for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks is held in Phoenix, Arizona. Florida pitcher Tony Saunders is taken with the 1st pick by the Devil Rays, while the Diamondbacks select pitcher Brian Anderson from Cleveland. Following the draft, the Diamondbacks acquire 3B Travis Fryman from the Tigers in exchange for infielders Joe Randa and Gabe Alvarez and P Matt Drews. They also obtain OF Devon White from the Marlins in exchange for P Jesus Martinez. In a rash of moves, the Devil Rays get 1B Fred McGriff from the Braves in exchange for a player to be named, C John Flaherty from the Padres in exchange for P Brian Boehringer and IF Andy Sheets, SS Kevin Stocker from the Phillies in exchange for Bobby Abreu, and sign free agent P Roberto Hernandez to a 4-year contract.

» August 29, 2000: The Red Sox defeat the Devil Rays, 8-0, as Pedro Martinez hurls a 1-hitter. Martinez takes a no-hitter into the 9th inning before John Flaherty leads off with a single. Martinez retires 24 in a row after hitting the game's first batter. Eight Devil Rays are ejected during the course of the game, including manager Larry Rothschild and two coaches.

» June 16, 2001: Brad Penny (7 innings) and Ricky Bones (2 innings) combine to shut out the Devil Rays, 11-0, on one hit. C John Flaherty's single is the only Tampa Bay safety.

» May 31, 2002: The Devil Rays score eight runs in the 4th inning of their game against Oakland, but still come out on the short end of a 13–9 score. Home plate umpire Steve Rippley is forced to leave the game after being hit in the head by a pitch from Tampa Bay's Lee Gardner, which hits Adam Piatt and deflects off catcher John Flaherty before hitting Rippley. He suffers a slight fracture between his left temple and cheekbone but never loses consciousness and is removed on a stretcher.
