Books and articles about Brian Fisher

Fisher was a surprising relief star for the 1985 Yankees, leading AL rookies with 14 saves while posting a 2.38 ERA. He declined in effectiveness in 1986 and was traded to Pittsburgh. Becoming a starter in 1987 after 126 straight relief appearances, he proceeded to finish among the league leaders in complete games and shutouts.

Fisher spent another solid season in the Pirates' rotation in 1988, but spent much of the 1989 season on the DL and never again regained his form. Brief comeback attempts with Houston (in 1990) and Seattle (in 1992) proved unsuccessful. (ME)

» December 5, 1984: The A's send base-stealing OF Rickey Henderson and P Bert Bradley to the Yankees in exchange for pitchers Jay Howell and Jose Rijo, OF Stan Javier, and minor leaguers Tim Birtsas and Eric Plunk. On the same day, the Yankees trade C Rick Cerone to the Braves for P Brian Fisher.

» November 24, 1986: In yet another unwise trade of prospects for aging veterans, the Yankees deal pitchers Brian Fisher, Doug Drabek, and Logan Easley to the Pirates for pitchers Rick Rhoden, Cecilio Guante, and Pat Clements. Drabek will win the NL Cy Young Award for Pittsburgh in 1990.

» September 7, 1987: That's spells relief. In for Brian Fisher, Pirate closer Jeff Robinson strikes out three Cubs on nine pitches, in the 8th inning. The Pirates win, 3–2. Both Cubs runs come on homers, by Leon Durham and Keith Moreland.

» September 25, 1992: The Mariners and Rangers use a major league–record 54 players, 29 by the Mariners, in Seattle's 4–3 win in 16 innings. The previous mark was 53 set in 1986. Seattle also goes into the record books by using 11 different pitchers; the previous mark was 10. The first sub was pitcher Rich DeLucia, who did not enter until the 7th inning. and issues the first walk. The frustrated Rangers strand 20 runners, helped by a club record of 18 strikeouts. After Omar Vizquel drives home the winning run, Brian Fisher picks up the save, his first since 1989 and the last of his career.
