» July 29, 1995: Star P Osvaldo Fernandez of the Cuban national team defects as his team plays Team USA in Millington, Tennessee.

» January 16, 1996: The Giants sign Cuban P Osvaldo Fernandez.

» April 10, 1996: In his major league debut, Cuban defector Osvaldo Fernandez allows just five hits and one run in eight innings as his Giants beat the Marlins, 5–1. Fernandez posted a fat 9.45 ERA in spring training.

» April 26, 1996: Gary Sheffield cracks a 2-run homer in the first inning off San Francisco starter Osvaldo Fernandez, but that's all the Marlin scoring as the Giants win, 3–2. For Sheffield, it is his 11th homer of April, matching the major league record for the month.
