FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 4, 1990: The Braves wisely select Florida high school SS Chipper Jones with the first pick in the annual free-agent draft. The Tigers follow with Tony Clark and the Phils use the 3rd pick on Mike Lieberthal. The A's use their 14th choice to take the much sought after Todd Van Poppel, passed over because of his stated intention to pitch at the University of Texas. The A's change his mind and he signs on July 16th for $1.2 million. Picking 20th, the Orioles take Stanford's Mike Mussina. Late in the 6th round, the independent Class A Miami Miracle drafts Mike Lansing under a never-before-used rule. The rule will be abolished, but Lansing will play two years with the Miracle and make the majors with the Expos. Troy Percival (Angels) and Mike Hampton (Mariners) go in the 6th round, Rusty Greer (Rangers) in the 10th, and on the 12th round, the Twins take SS Pat Meares. The White Sox end up with the best draft, taking Alex Fernandez (1st round), Bob Wickman (2nd), Robert Ellis (3rd), James Baldwin (4th), Ray Durham (5th), Brandon Wilson (18th), and Jason Bere (36th). After selecting Carl Everett with the 10th overall pick, the Yanks pull two winners out of the low rounds: Andy Pettitte in the 20th round and Jorge Posada in the 24th.

» May 4, 1992: White Sox P Alex Fernandez hurls a 1-hit shutout over the Brewers, winning 7–0.

» July 14, 1994: Chicago's Alex Fernandez strikes out 12 innings to win his 8th straight game, defeating Cleveland, 6–3. The White Sox move ahead of the Tribe by 1/2 game in the American League Central.

» April 22, 1996: In Arlington, Harold Baines, with a 3-run blast, and Robin Ventura hit consecutive homers in the 6th as the Sox halt the Rangers' five-game win streak, 12–4. Ventura and Danny Tartabull then hit back-to-back homers in the 8th to cinch Alex Fernandez's 3rd win.

» December 9, 1996: The Marlins sign free agent P Alex Fernandez to a 5-year contract.

» April 10, 1997: Florida P Alex Fernandez hurls a 1-hit, 1-0 victory over the Cubs. Fernandez fans eight without walking a batter, and allows just a single to Dave Hansen with one out in the 9th inning.

» May 29, 1997: In Florida, Rockies' OF Ellis Burks hits a 2-run double to cap a three-run rally in the ninth inning and help Colorado beat Florida, 6-5. Colorado trails 4-0 in the 6th, before Larry Walker, Andres Galarraga, and Dante Bichette hit consecutive homers off Alex Fernandez.

» August 30, 1997: Behind Alex Fernandez, the Marlins solidify their hold on the NL wild card position (79–55) with a 4-1 victory over the Blue Jays. OF Shawn Green has all three of Toronto's hits.

» October 3, 1997: The Marlins sweep their division series from the Giants with a 6-2 win behind Alex Fernandez. OF Devon White's 6th-inning grand slam is the key blow in the game.
