Despite his excellent arm, Fairey became typecast as a lefthanded pinch hitter after smacking a pinch homer for Los Angeles in 1968. Taken by the Expos in the expansion draft, Fairey hit .254 lifetime in the pinch, and led the NL with 55 pinch-hitting appearances in 1972. (MC)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 20, 1968: Dodger rookie Jim Fairey makes his first ML homer a good one, a blast off Pittsburgh's Elroy Face to give LA a 3–2 win. The loss snaps Pittsburgh's 9-game win streak.

» May 7, 1970: The Expos loose their biggest scoring burst in their 2-year history, topping the Giants, 15–8, on 15 hits. Jim Fairey has a homer and four RBIs, while Willie Mays homers for the Giants. In the first inning, RF Rusty Staub throws out the Giants Ron Hunt, 9–3.

» April 21, 1972: A pinch hit double by Jim Fairey allows the unbeaten Expos to defeat the Cardinals, 2–1. The Cardinals strand 15 runners, including three in the 9th. At the plate, losing pitcher Rick Wise, one of the best hitting pitchers in baseball, leaves a record-tying nine runners on base.
