After a nine-game ML career with the Reds, Essick became a minor league owner and manager, leading Vernon to three consecutive Pacific Coast League pennants. As the PCL scout for the Yankees from 1926 to 1950, Essick signed Joe DiMaggio after other scouts had given up on him because of his leg injuries. His nickname was derived from his surname, which sounds like the German word for vinegar. (FVP)
