Ely was the regular Pittsburgh shortstop from 1896 until early in 1901, when he was dismissed from the team for allegedly trying to persuade players to jump to the rival American League. His replacement was converted outfielder Honus Wagner. Half of Ely's career homers came in 1894. (ME)
