FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 8, 1940: The Waner brothers, Lloyd Waner and Paul Waner, lose their places in the Pittsburgh OF when new manager Frank Frisch acquires Vince DiMaggio for Johnny Rizzo, who hit 23 home runs as a rookie in 1938 with Cincinnati. Vince takes over CF, flanked by Maurice Van Robays and Bob Elliott, each playing their first full season. Yesterday the Bucs sold OF Fern Bell to Toronto.

» May 25, 1947: In the Giants 9–3 win over the Braves, Giant Buddy Kerr bungles a hard grounder from Bob Elliott for his first error in 384 chances and 69 games, the National League record to date for SS.

» October 10, 1948: A 6-run 7th kayoes Bob Feller and 2 successors for the Braves' 11-5 victory. Bob Elliott has 2 HRs, one for 3 runs. The WS crowd is even larger than the day before, 86,288, only to be exceeded in the LA Coliseum in 1959.

» September 24, 1949: Bob Elliott hits 3 successive HRs for Boston, as the Braves down the Giants 6-4.

» May 6, 1950: The Boston Braves hit five home runs in a 15–11 trouncing of the Reds. This gives them a National League record 13 home runs in three consecutive games, breaking the Giants mark of 12 set in July 1, 2, 3, 1947. Luis Olmo, Earl Torgeson, Bob Elliott, Willard Marshall, and Sid Gordon hit the five today.

» May 15, 1951: At Crosley Field, Braves P Vern Bickford pitches a 2-hitter, but Ewell Blackwell bests him by allowing one hit, as the Reds win, 1–0. Connie Ryan's 6th inning hit is the 1st off Bickford, and Johnny Pramesa's homer in the 7th is the other. The only Boston hit is a 5th inning double by Bob Elliott. The Reds tie the National League record (set in 1911) for nine innings by going to bat just 24 times.

» May 13, 1952: Bobby Thomson has a home run and double to drive in five runs to power the Giants to a 7–4 win over the Reds. Bob Elliott and Willie Mays also homer as Larry Jansen wins his 10th straight over the Reds going back to August 29, 1948.

» March 25, 1953: The Browns sign free agent Bob Elliott. The veteran third baseman will play just 48 games before being dealt to the White Sox.

» May 28, 1953: Bob Elliott drives in six runs—4 on a grand slam—to lead the Browns to a 7–5 win over the Indians. Satchel Paige picks up his 2nd save in two nights.

» May 29, 1953: 3B Bob Elliott lines a double in the Browns 6-run 11th inning, as they beat the Tigers 11–5. For Elliott it is his 2,000th ML hit. Harry Brecheen (1–6) wins his first.

» June 14, 1953: White Sox hurlers Billy Pierce and Sandy Consuegra throw shutouts at the Red Sox in a doubleheader, winning 6-0 and 10. Pierce's gem is a 2-hitter. Chicago also picks up two players from the Browns, getting veterans 3B Bob Elliott and P Virgil Trucks for P Lou Kretlow, C Darrell Johnson, and $75,000. St. Louis had obtained Trucks only six months ago from Detroit.

» November 18, 1959: Kansas City announces that Bob Elliott will be its new manager, replacing the often-ill Harry Craft, who was released at the end of the season.

» October 3, 1960: Joe Gordon (26-31) resigns as manager of the Tigers, blaming interference by from club president Bill DeWitt. Gordon will be named manager of the KC Athletics, replacing Bob Elliott.
