Eller was an effective pitcher in his first four years with the Reds, peaking in the pennant-winning season of 1919, when he went 20-9 with a 2.39 ERA. That fall he threw a shutout in Game Five of the WS, with six consecutive strikeouts in the second and third innings, and a complete-game victory in the finale. But his WS achievements were tainted: the Reds' opponents were the infamous "Black Sox," bribed to throw the Series. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 19, 1917: In the opener of 2, the Red's Hod Eller loses 2–1 to the Cubs, scattering six hits and striking out 6. He then starts the nitecap and is ahead 6–2 when the game is called after six innings.

» August 21, 1917: Reds rookie righthander Hod Eller fans the side on nine pitches in the 9th inning, beating the Giants 7–5, and breaking Slim Sallee's 10-game winning streak.

» May 11, 1919: Cincinnati righthander Hod Eller pitches a 6-0 no-hitter over the Cards.

» May 15, 1919: The Reds bomb Al Mamaux for 10 runs in the 13th to beat Brooklyn 10-0. Reds RF Alfred "Greasy" Neale has a record 10 putouts. Hod Eller's scoreless string will end at 22, but he will go on to win 10 in a row.

» October 6, 1919: After a Sunday rainout, Hod Eller blanks the Sox on 3 hits, fanning 6 in a row -- Gandil, Risberg, Ray Schalk, Williams, Leibold, and Eddie Collins -- in the 2nd and 3rd. Once again a big inning gives the Reds a victory. A couple of hits, some slow fielding, and poor throws by Jackson and Happy Felsch result in 4 Reds scoring in the 6th for a 5-0 win, their 4th in 5 games. Lefty Williams is the loser. Sox C Schalk is the 2nd man to be thrown out of a WS game when he disagrees with the call on Heinie Groh's slide at home.

» October 9, 1919: Lefty Williams gets one man out in the first before departing. The Reds lead 4-0, and go on to give Hod Eller a 10-5 victory and the Reds the world title in 8 games. Joe Jackson hits the only HR of the Series. Eddie Collins's 3 hits give him a total of 42 in WS play, a record broken in 1930 by Frank Frisch, and bettered by Lou Gehrig in 1938. A SB by Collins is his 14th in WS competition, a record tied by Lou Brock in 1968.

» September 20, 1920: At New York, the Giants and Reds break even, with New York taking the 1st game, 5–2, with three unearned runs. The Reds win game 2, 9–3, as Hod Eller strikes out 8, including George Burns three times. Cincinnati 2B Maurice Rath, who will hit only two home runs in 506 ABs, collects both of them in game 2: both are inside-the-park home runs, in the 7th and 8th innings.

» September 28, 1920: At Cincinnati, the Reds take a pair from the Pirates, winning 2–0 and 5–3. Dolf Luque leaves with a sore arm after one inning of the lidlifter and Hod Eller throws eight innings to win. Eller then goes five 1/3 innings of game two but leaves without a decision.

» August 15, 1973: In Pittsburgh, Reds ace Jack Billingham wins, 1–0, notching his 7th shutout of the year. This ties the club record set by Hod Eller back in 1919.

» June 15, 1991: Pitching against the Reds in only his second major league start, Phillies rookie Andy Ashby strikes out the side on nine pitches in the 4th inning. A first for the Phillies, it is the 19th time in major league history this has happened, and the 4th time a rookie has accomplished the feat. Hod Eller (1917), Sloppy Thurston (1923), and Nolan Ryan (1968) were the other freshmen to turn the trick. Ashby is the loser in the 3-1 Phillie loss.
