The ex-Navy medic applied solid defensive skills as a backup catcher in the bigs, followed by a career as a coach with the Phillies and Indians and as a minor league manager. Edwards's 1981 Charleston Charlies played Pawtucket in a 33-inning marathon, the longest game in professional history. He replaced Pat Corrales as the Indians' manager in July 1987 and was dismissed in September 1989. (JCA)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 25, 1963: The Indians acquire C Joe Azcue and SS Dick Howser from the A's for C Doc Edwards and $100,000.

» September 12, 1964: The Orioles' Frank Bertaina and the A's Bob Meyer duel in the ML's 5th double one-hitter. Bertaina prevails 1–0, his 1st ML win and only decision of the year. Johnny Orsino's 8th inning double and Doc Edwards 5th inning two-bagger account for the hits. Baltimore sets a major-league record for fewest at-bats in a nine inning game (8 times at bat) with 19, and both clubs go to the plate just 46 times. The last battle of matching one-hitters was June 21, 1956.

» May 3, 1965: The Yankees trade John Blanchard (.147) and P Roland Sheldon to Kansas City for C Doc Edwards. Edwards will replace the injured Elston Howard.

» January 14, 1966: Cleveland trades OF Lu Clinton to the Yankees for C Doc Edwards, who won't play in the majors until 1970, with the Phillies.

» May 2, 1970: During a 7–1 loss to the Giants, the Phillies lose both of their catchers, Tim McCarver and Mike Ryan, with broken hands in successive innings. The two will miss a combined total of 197 games with both coming back in early September. Jim Hutto is hastily brought in to catch. The Phillies will call up the likes of Del Bates and Mike Compton and even use bullpen coach Doc Edwards, who will bat .269 in 35 games.

» July 15, 1987: The Indians fire manager Pat Corrales, replacing him with bullpen coach Doc Edwards. Cleveland is in last place in the American League East, 23 games behind, after finishing 84-78 in 1986.

» September 12, 1989: The Indians fire manager Doc Edwards and replace him for the remainder of the season with scout John Hart.
