FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 19, 2001: The Rockies obtain IF Alex Ochoa from the Reds for 2B Todd Walker and minor league OF Robin Jennings. The Reds also call up top OF prospect Adam Dunn, who hit 32 homers in the minors this year. Dunn will clout 19 homers for the Reds including 12 in August, setting the NL rookie record for most home run in any month, with 12. The old mark of 11 was set by Frank Robinson, in August 1956. The only other rookies to hit more home run in a month were Rudy York (18--August 1937), Mark McGwire (May 1987) and Jimmie Hall (13--August 1963).

» August 26, 2001: Led by hot-hitting Adam Dunn's four hits and Ken Griffey Jr.'s four RBIs, the Reds roll by Montreal, 17–4. Robin Jennings, in his ML debut, collects four hits, a Reds club record and tying the ML record.

» April 28, 2002: The Giants edge the Reds, 5–4, behind homers by Reggie Sanders and Benito Santiago. Robb Nen relieves in the 8th after Adam Dunn hits a 2-run home run. An insurance run in the top of the 9th offsets another Dunn homer, off Nen. Ump union head John Hirschbeck tells fellow ump Mark Carlson not to issue a warning to Reds P Gabe White after a pitch sails over the head of Barry Bonds. Hirschbeck will be sent a warning letter about this, which will end up before a judge.

» July 2, 2002: At Cincinnati, the Astros and Reds play the first inning with non–regulation baseballs, the result of a mix–up by an attendant in the umpires' locker room. The attendant did not notice the word "practice" stenciled on the 144 balls he rubbed up for the game; the practice balls generally have defects such as irregular stitching or weight deviations. Astros pitcher Wade Miller notices the practice ball when warming up and informs ump Mark Hirschbeck, who rules that the practice balls must be used in the bottom of the 1st before switching. Reds starter Wade Miller served up a homer in the 1st to Lance Berkman, who hits another in his next at bat, good for five RBIs. He leads the National League with 74 ribbies. The Astros win in the 10th, 6–5. Austin Kearns has four hits, and Adam Dunn a homer for the Reds.
