The freckle-faced, sure-handed Duffy was Cleveland's starting shortstop from 1972 through 1977. A Stanford graduate drafted by Cincinnati, in May 1971 he went to the Giants with Vern Geishert for George Foster in a notoriously uneven trade, and that November he was dealt to the Indians with Gaylord Perry for Sam McDowell. He led AL shortstops in fielding in 1973 and 1976. (JCA)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 29, 1971: In a great trade for Cincinnati, the Giants ship OF George Foster to the Reds for SS Frank Duffy and P Vern Geishert.

» November 29, 1971: In three blockbuster deals, the Cubs trade P Ken Holtzman to the A's for OF Rick Monday; the Giants trade P Gaylord Perry and SS Frank Duffy to the Indians for P Sam McDowell; and the Reds trade 1B Lee May, 2B Tommy Helms, and OF Jimmy Stewart to the Astros for 2B Joe Morgan, OF Cesar Geronimo, and P Jack Billingham. This trade, criticized in the Cincinnati press, is one of the best in Reds history, and puts the wheels on the big Red Machine, as future Hall of Famer Morgan will win two MVPs.

» July 29, 1972: Brooks Robinson hits a 2-out home run in the 11th to give Baltimore a 4–3 win over the Indians. Frank Duffy hits his 1st ML home run for the Tribe and John Lowenstein hit a home run in the 9th to briefly give the Indians the lead.

» September 24, 1972: In the nitecap of a twinbill sweep over the Indians, Sparky Lyle sets an American League record and tying the ML mark by saving his 35th game. The Yanks win, 8–3, after gaining a 5–4 win in the opener when they score two unearned runs on five Indian errors in the 11th. Munson steals 2B by kicking the ball out of Frank Duffy's glove and going to 3B on the error. Duffy then boots a grounder and throws wildly for two more E's. Catcher Gerry Moses then picks up a squibber and fires over 1B and RF Del Unser's throw to the plate is over Moses' head for error 5.

» July 19, 1978: The Red Sox beat the Brewers 8–2, scoring four in the 7th and four in the 8th, to increase their lead in the American League Eastern Division to nine games over Milwaukee, 12 1/2 over Baltimore, and 14 games over the 4th-place Yankees. In the 7th, the Sox have George Scott on 2B and Butch Hobson, playing his first game in weeks because of muscle spasms, on 1B. On a Frank Duffy single, Scott scores on a close play, prompting an argument by Brews' catcher Charlie Moore. No time is called, however, and Hobson strolls around the bases to score from first, while Duffy is finally thrown out trying for 3B. Fisk accounts for the other three runs in the inning with his 13th homer of the year.
