Books and articles about Dick Drott

When Dick Drott won 15 games for the seventh-place Cubs in 1957, he seemed headed for stardom. He was wild enough to lead the league in walks, but his fastball intimidated batters at first. Then, his career floundered because of arm problems and he passed to the expansion Houston team in the draft.

On April 27 of his rookie season, Drake was ejected from a game for borrowing a wheelchair from a crippled fan and wheeling fellow flake Moe Drabowsky to first base after Drabowsky was hit on the foot by a pitch. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 26, 1957: At Wrigley Field, rookie Dick Drott, 20, of the Cubs strikes out 15 Braves, including Hank Aaron and Billy Bruton three times, en route to a 7–5 victory in game one. Drott's 15 K's is a Cubs 20th C. mark for nine innings (to be broken by Kerry Wood) and one shy of John Clarkson's 1886 club mark. His 15 wins this year are the most for a Cub rookie since Pat Malone won 18 in 1928. Chicago sweeps, winning the nitecap, 5–4.

» July 6, 1958: Cubs pitchers Dick Drott and Don Elston combine on a 1-hit, 6-2 win over the Dodgers. Jim Gilliam's' single in the seventh is the only Los Angeles safety.

» June 20, 1963: Larry Jackson allows just four Houston hits, and Billy Williams cracks two homers and a double, as the Cubs win, 5–0. Former Cub Dick Drott is the loser.
