Dopson went 3-11 for the 1988 Expos despite a fine 3.04 ERA. Traded to the Red Sox after the season in the Spike Owen deal, he received better support and proved to be a solid, if inconsistent, number-three starter. But he also encountered balk trouble in the American League.

Elbow problems limited Dopson to a total of five appearances in 1990 and 1991, and he then posted back-to-back 7-11 seasons for Boston the following two years before closing out his career with California in 1994. (WOR)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» December 8, 1988: Pitcher Bruce Hurst, considered the cream of this year's free-agent crop, signs a 3-year contract with the Padres. The Yankees sign free-agent pitcher Andy Hawkins, and the Expos trade P John Dopson and SS Luis Rivera to Boston for SS Spike Owen, and OF Tracy Jones to San Francisco for OF-1B Mike Aldrete.

» June 13, 1989: Despite this year's relaxed balk rule, Red Sox pitcher John Dopson manages to tie the American League record with four balks in just 32/3 innings in Boston's 8–7 win over Detroit.

» June 15, 1992: Red Sox P Jeff Reardon moves into first place on the all-time save list with number 342. It comes in Boston's 1–0 win over the Yankees. John Dopson is the winner over Scott Sanderson. Phil Plantier's homer is the only score.
