Famed sportswriter Grantland Rice named Devlin third baseman on his all-time Giants team. After two minor league seasons at Newark, Devlin joined New York in 1904. In three of his eight Giant seasons, he led NL third basemen in assists; in 1908 he also led in putouts and fielding average. Alert and speedy, he had good range at third base (he ranks 15th all-time in chances per game) and stole more than 20 bases six times, tying for the league lead with 59 in 1905. Devlin's best batting average was .299 in 1906. He averaged only one HR per year but his first HR came in his first ML at bat, with the bases loaded. After finishing his NL career with two seasons in Boston, Devlin played four additional years in the minors. (FIC)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 21, 1905: The Giants run past the Pirates, 10–2, with Christy Mathewson defeating Deacon Phillippe. New York swipes five bases including a steal of home by Art Devlin.

» August 6, 1906: In New York, Art Devlin and John McGraw are tossed for abusing umpire James Johnstone during a 3-1 loss to Chicago. The two will be suspended.

» September 23, 1907: At the start of the Giants match in Pittsburgh, John McGraw hands Bill Klem the lineup card with Roger Bresnahan's name in the lineup. The two argue about whether the catcher can play after yesterday's ejection and then when Klem turns away he is hit in the face with a glass of water. No culprit comes forward but Klem gets his revenge in the 6th by ejecting McGraw and Art Devlin for arguing a call. The Pirates win, 2-1.

» May 9, 1908: Art Devlin cracks a 1st inning double with the bases loaded and the Giants score seven runs off Irv Young in the 1st two innings. Christy Mathewson scatters 10 Braves hits in coasting to a 7-3 win.

» May 23, 1908: Giants 3B Art Devlin ties a record by handling 13 total chances as the Cards beat New York 6-2. Two errors cost him a new record.

» July 4, 1908: Lefthander Hooks Wiltse pitches a 10-inning no-hitter for the Giants over the Phillies 1–0. He loses his bid for a perfect nine innings when, with two outs, he hits Phils P George McQuillan with a pitch on an 1-and-2 count. Ump Charles Rigler calls the pitch earlier a ball, to the dismay of Hooks and the fans, who thought it a strike. Art Devlin scores the winner in the 10th after singling off McQuillan and coming around on two errors. New York wins the nitecap more easily, 9–3.

» May 2, 1910: At Washington Park, Christy Mathewson pitches a beautiful one-hitter to beat Brooklyn, 6–0. Only an error by Fred Merkle on a Zack Wheat grounder in the 7th and a disputed hit in the 8th mar Matty's performance. In the 8th inning, Pryor McElveen hits a grounder to short, but 3B Art Devlin cuts in front and his throw is low to 1B. It is ruled a hit even though the New York Times called it an error: its headline tomorrow proclaims "Brooklyn Gets No-hit By Mathewson."

» June 23, 1910: Giants 3B Art Devlin and two teammates are jailed for attacking a Washington Park fan who had been verbally abusing them during an 8–2 triumph over the Superbas.

» August 25, 1913: Braves vet Art Devlin slaps the game-winning hit in the 9th for Boston and gets rewarded by manager George Stallings by being sent down to Rochester, never to return to the ML. His .229 average might have had something to do with it.

» September 30, 1921: Prior to the Braves-Giants game, the Giants Old Timers take on the Giants regulars in a 5-inning contest. Twenty thousand fans cheer as former stars, Christy Mathewson, Roger Bresnahan, George Wiltse, Art Devlin, Larry Doyle and Fred Tenney whip the current Giants, 2–0. The regular game is called because of rain after one inning, but only 4,000 fans ask for a refund.

» July 25, 1926: Braves coach Art Devlin is riding Reds 3B Babe Pinelli. Coming off the field in the third, Pinelli brushes against him. Devlin swings, starting one of the great baseball fights of the century. Police restore order, but not before Boston OF Frank Wilson is arrested and taken to jail for hitting a police inspector. In the fourth, Boston OF Jimmy Welsh crashes into C Val Picinich in a play at the plate. Picinich takes a poke at him, starting round two, and is ejected.
