Eugene Napolean DeMontreville, the elegantly-named son of French parents, appeared
in boxscores mostly as plain Gene Demont due to the space limitations of the typesetters.
He finished his career with 228 stolen bases and was the master of the delayed steal.
A younger brother, Lee, appeared briefly with the Cardinals. Ill-health shortened
DeMontreville's playing career.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
»January 25, 1899: Chicago veteran Bill Dahlen is traded to Baltimore (National League) for Gene DeMontreville. Like many Baltimore players, Dahlen will end up in Brooklyn when the season starts.
»June 1, 1901: At the Polo Grounds, the first-place Giants top Boston Somersets' Kid Nichols, 2-1, behind Christy Mathewson's 5-hitter. Matty fans 10 Boston batters, much to the delight of the overflow crowd. He strikes out Gene DeMontreville in the 6th and when the bat sails out of the DeMontreville's hands on the 3rd strike, Matty tosses it to 1B to complete the play.
