Obtained as part of the deal that sent Ozzie Smith to the Cardinals, DeLeon gave
the Padres two excellent seasons of relief until overwork caught up with him. In
1982 he was 9-5 with 15 saves in 61 appearances and the next year 6-6 with 13 saves.
His strength was his control, as he walked only 43 batters in 223 innings during
those seasons.
