Davis never started a ML game, but was often outstanding in relief, especially as a set-up man for Rich Gossage with the Yankees. He had an AL rookie-record 14 relief wins in 1979, three seasons with 25 or more saves, and on May 4, 1981 he fanned eight consecutive Oakland batters. He had little to offer besides a hard fastball, and was ineffective when it failed him. (ME)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 10, 1978: The Yankees send former ace Ken Holtzman back to the Cubs, his first team, in exchange for minor leaguer Ron Davis. Holtzman proved a disappointment in New York, and he will not recapture his form in Chicago. Davis will blossom in 1979 when his 14–2 mark sets a record for most wins by a rookie reliever. The previous mark was 13 wins by Yankee Wilcy Moore.

» May 4, 1981: Yankee reliever Ron Davis strikes out the last eight batters of the game in a 4–2 win over the Angels, tying Nolan Ryan's American League record (done twice) for consecutive strikeouts and setting a new record for consecutive strikeouts by a reliever.

» October 7, 1981: Ron Davis and Goose Gossage provide a 1-2 relief punch that Milwaukee cannot survive, losing to the Yankees 5–3 in the opening game of the American League Eastern Division playoff.

» October 13, 1981: In the ALCS opener against Oakland, Yankee pitching once again asserts itself, as Tommy John, Ron Davis, and Goose Gossage combine to hold up Graig Nettles's first-inning 3-run double 3–1.

» April 10, 1982: The Yankees trade relief pitcher Ron Davis and minor leaguers Paul Boris and Greg Gagne to the Twins for veteran IF Roy Smalley. Gagne hit .270 and .297 the past two seasons at Greensboro.

» September 27, 1984: The Indians top the Twins, 4–3, on a 2-out pinch solo homer in the 9th by Jamie Quirk. Ron Davis serves up the game-winner to Quirk, whose contract was purchased three days ago from the Chicago White Sox. For Quirk, it will be his only at bat in a Cleveland uniform during his one-week stint: the Tribe will release him on October one when the season ends.

» May 13, 1985: Trailing 8–0 after two innings, the Yankees rally to beat Minnesota 9–8 on Don Mattingly's 3-run home run off Ron Davis with two out in the bottom of the 9th.

» June 17, 2001: Royals fireballer Blake Stein fans eight straight Brewers, and 11 in five 2/3 innings, but Milwaukee defeats Kansas City, 5-2. Only Nolan Ryan (twice), Ron Davis and Roger Clemens have struck out eight in a row in the AL. Tom Seaver holds the major-league record with 10 straight K's, in 1970.

» July 19, 2001: Arizona defeats San Diego, 3–0, in the completion of a game that was suspended after two innings on July 18. Randy Johnson strikes out 16 batters in his seven innings of relief of Schilling to break the ML mark set by Walter Johnson on July 25, 1913. He allows just one hit—C Wiki Gonzalez' 8th–inning single—for the Padres only hit in the contest. In addition to setting the record for Ks in a game by a reliever, Johnson also sets the NL reliever record with seven consecutive strikeouts. Johnson was one shy of the major league mark, set by Ron Davis, on May 4, 1981.
