His first big league manager, Bill Rigney, called Jim Davenport "the greatest third baseman I ever saw - at least the only one I'd compare with Billy Cox." Davenport, who played every infield position as well as the outfield during his 13-year ML tenure, led NL third basemen in fielding three times and won a Gold Glove in 1962. Also in '62, Davenport reached career-high figures in batting (.297) and home runs (14) and played in an All-Star Game. In 1967 the 5'11" 180-lb Davenport played errorless ball in 65 straight games and averaged .370 as a pinch hitter. After many years as a Giants coach, he became their manager in 1985, 27 years after his ML playing debut in the team's first San Francisco game. Davenport relinquished the managerial reins before the season ended. In 1987 he became a Phillies coach. (TJ)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 6, 1958: With the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Cards reliever Larry Jackson hits Jim Davenport with a pitch to hand the Giants a 5-4 win. In the same situation the day before, Jackson walked Willie Kirkland to lose 5-4.

» September 12, 1958: The Giants sweep the Phillies 5–2 and 19–2 as Willie Mays has six hits to raise his average to .333. Jim Davenport tops him with seven hits, including a 3-run inside-the-park home run in the first inning of game 2, and scores seven runs.

» April 12, 1959: At St. Louis, the Giants break a 3-3 tie when, with two out in the 9th, Jim Davenport bunts safely off Vinegar Bend Mizell. Orlando Cepeda follows with a triple and Felipe Alou homers. Giants win, 6–3.

» June 15, 1963: Juan Marichal becomes the first Giants P to hurl a no-hitter since Carl Hubbell (on May 8, 1929), and the first Latin American to toss one in the ML. Eighth-inning doubles by Jim Davenport and Chuck Hiller provide the only score in the Giants 1–0 win at Candlestick.

» September 6, 1965: At Los Angeles, Don Drysdale and the newly signed Warren Spahn face each other again, but both are gone by extra innings. Drysdale lasts eight innings, but Spahn exits after a 1+ inning ripping. The Giants win, 7–6, in 12 innings on Jim Davenport's hit, and move a game behind the first-place Dodgers. Juan Marichal, who hit John Roseboro over the head with a bat 15 days ago, is banned from the trip.

» May 13, 1966: Giant Jim Davenport's 17th-inning home run beats the Mets 5–4 before 56,658 fans, the largest night crowd ever at Shea Stadium. The first-place Giants (22-7) now have 12 straight wins.

» September 30, 1967: Jim Davenport sets an National League record with his 64th straight errorless game—137 chances—at 3B for the Giants.

» April 29, 1968: The Giants Jim Davenport plays his 97th consecutive errorless game at 3B.

» October 30, 1984: The Giants name Jim Davenport manager for the 1985 season.

» April 27, 1996: Barry Bonds hits two homers, the 300th and 301st of his career, then with the Giants leading 6–1, he is tossed out of the game for disputing a 6th-inning, 3rd-strike call. Bonds is only the 4th major leaguer to hit 300 homers and steal 300 bases, joining his father Bobby Bonds, his godfather Willie Mays, and Andre Dawson. Bonds Sr. is the first base coach today, filling in for Jim Davenport, while Dawson, playing left field for the Marlins, has the best view of the two homers. Mark Leiter (2–3) allows six hits for the 6–3 win, with Rod Beck getting the final out.
