Books and articles about Danny Darwin

A native Texan, Darwin went undrafted and was signed by the Rangers. Throwing in the 94-mph range, he fanned the first four Mariners he faced in his major-league debut on September 24, 1978. In 1980 he went 13-4 (2.62) with eight saves but broke a knuckle on his right hand when aiding Mickey Rivers in a scuffle with fans outside Comiskey Park on June 4 and was disabled for three weeks. Moved into and out of the rotation, he was a .500 pitcher before his 1985 trade to Milwaukee. That year he went 8-18, despite a staff-best 3.80 ERA. He lost 10 consecutive games to set a Brewers record; it took a one-hitter against the Twins to halt the streak. As his fastball began to wane, he became more of a finesse pitcher who relied on his forkball, slider and outstanding control.

Darwin was traded to Houston for their 1986 pennant drive and went 5-2. During his four remaining years with the Astros, he continued his schizophrenic career as both reliever and starter. He combined for 50 starts in 1987 and 1988, then was used exclusively in relief during 1989, when he posted an 11-4 record with seven saves in 68 appearances. The following season he again notched an 11-4 mark, this time leading the league with a 2.21 ERA.

After his tenure in Houston, Darwin signed a free-agent contract with the Red Sox in December 1990. He started a career-high 34 games and tallied a career-best 15 victories for Boston in 1993. After struggling in 1994, Darwin fared miserably in 1995, winning just three times against 10 defeats in 20 games for Toronto and Texas. He pitched well enough for the last-place Pirates in 1996 to once again catch the attention of the Astros, who acquired him in July 1996 for right-hander Rich Loiselle.

Darwin signed with the White Sox in February 1997 and was pitching effectively when the club dealt him to San Francisco that August as part of the infamous "White Flag" trade. With Chicago still within striking distance of the Indians in the AL Central, the front office sent Darwin, starter Wilson Alvarez and reliever Roberto Hernandez to the Giants for a package of young prospects that included infielder Mike Caruso and relievers Bobby Howry and Keith Foulke. After the season Darwin re-signed with San Francisco, where he made 25 starts and eight relief appearances in his final major-league campaign. (JCA/AGL)

    FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 31, 1972: Dick Allen becomes the first player since 1950 (Hank Thompson) to hit two inside-the-park homers in a game. Minnesota's Bert Blyleven is on the mound in the first and the 5th when Allen connects past Danny Darwin in CF. Chicago wins, 8–1 behind Stan Bahnsen, with Allen driving in five with his homers.

» July 2, 1975: Jim Rice, installed today as the Red Sox regular LF, belts two homers in the first game, including one that is the longest ever hit at County Stadium. In game 2, Fred Lynn is kept off the bases, ending his streak of 38 straight games. Boston's Rick Wise wins the opener, 6–3, not giving up a hit until two are out in the 9th. George Scott then clouts a 2-run homer, and Danny Darwin follows with another dinger.

» May 28, 1977: The Red Sox swap Danny Darwin to the Cubs for P Ramon Hernandez and sell P Tom House to the Mariners.

» January 18, 1985: In a 4-team trade, the Brewers send catcher Jim Sundberg to Kansas City and receive pitchers Danny Darwin from Texas and Tim Leary from the Mets. The Mets receive pitcher Frank Wills from the Royals, who also send catcher Don Slaught to Texas. C Bill Hance goes from Texas to Milwaukee.

» August 19, 1985: At Milwaukee, Roy Smalley's homer in the 5th is the Twins only hit off Danny Darwin. The Brewers win, 2–1.

» August 20, 1989: For the 3rd time in his career, Kevin Bass homers from each side of the plate in a game, as the Astros double the Cubs, 8–4, winning again in the 9th. Bass's second homer of the game is a grand slam with one out in the 9th off Mitch Williams, with the loss going to Lancaster. Danny Darwin (11–3) is the winner.

» August 18, 1993: Boston P Danny Darwin hurls a 1-hit, 5-0 shutout over the visiting White Sox. Dan Pasqua's triple with one out in the 8th inning is Chicago's only safety.

» July 23, 1996: The Pirates trade P Danny Darwin to the Astros in exchange for minor league P Rich Loiselle.

» August 12, 1996: The Expos defeat the Astros, 8-1, in a game marked by a 3rd-inning 10-minute brawl which will result in 4-game suspensions being handed down to Henry Rodriguez, Moises Alou, David Segui, Jeff Juden, and John Cangelosi. Danny Darwin gets six games. Houston manager Terry Collins receives a gash that will require four stitches to close when he's hit by a thrown batting helmet. The fight starts when Rodriguez is plunked by a pitch, the apparent result of his stopping and admiring a homer he hit his last time up. Al Leiter pitches a 3-hitter to win, although he gives up a leadoff homer to Brian Hunter.

» July 31, 1997: The San Francisco Giants receive starting pitchers Wilson Alvarez and Danny Darwin, along with top reliever Roberto Hernandez from the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox, just three 1/2 games behind Cleveland in the American League Central, receive minor league SS Mike Caruso, OF Brian Manning, and Ps Lorenzo Barcelo, Keith Foulke, Bob Howry, and Ken Vining. In the house cleaning, the Sox have moved eight players with a combined 92 years of ML experience. Sox 3B Robin Ventura observes, "We didn't realize August first was the end of the season."
